Abstract

Background: The increasing number of patient visits to the Emergency Department (ER) and the risk of triage errors that can endanger patient safety make the implementation of the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) triage system very important. Although nurses generally have a high level of knowledge, optimal triage implementation is not always achieved, especially if it is not supported by objective peer evaluation. This study aims to analyze the relationship between nurses' knowledge and the implementation of ESI triage based on peer assessment in the Jakarta X Emergency Department. This study design was quantitative with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 34 nurses selected using a total sampling technique. The instruments used were a knowledge questionnaire and a peer observation sheet. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed that most nurses had good knowledge (67.6%) and implemented triage correctly (82.4%). However, the analysis results showed a p-value of 0.638, which is greater than the significance value of 0.05 (0.638 > 0.05). This indicates that there is no significant relationship between the level of knowledge and the implementation of ESI triage. In conclusion, although nurses have good knowledge and demonstrate correct triage practices, there are other factors beyond knowledge such as training experience, work environment, and leadership support that may influence triage performance.
